The state is compact, but its systems are local. Read the signs, check the operator and avoid treating a neighborhood as scenery.
A train name is not a whole trip
PATH, NJ TRANSIT rail, light rail, buses, ferries and Amtrak have different fares, schedules and service alerts.
Follow the road design
Jughandles and signed turn patterns are common. Do not improvise a direct left turn where the road sends traffic elsewhere.
Beach access varies
Badge, parking, guarded-swimming and seasonal rules differ by municipality. Check the town’s current official information.
Pack a second plan
Crowded trailheads, storms, coastal wind, heat and transit disruptions can all change a day. The backup should be real, not theoretical.
Central Jersey gets a chapter
You do not have to settle the border debate to recognize the region’s practical identity.
The useful rule
New Jersey is not a punchline or a view from New York.
Name the town. Learn the neighborhood. Support the place you are actually in. Leave the beach, park, block or train car easier for the next person to use.
